Ceiling Grid Systems

T38 exposed grid and T37 concealed grid — the two systems behind every suspended and flush plastered ceiling in South Africa. Both in stock at our Edenvale warehouse.

Know Your Grid System

The grid you choose determines the look, the finish and what goes into it. They are two completely different systems — not interchangeable.

Exposed Grid

T38 Grid

Visible white or black grid lines. Acoustic or vinyl ceiling tiles drop in from above. Fast installation, easy tile access. The commercial standard across SA offices, schools, retail and clinics.

Concealed Grid

T37 Grid

Grid is completely hidden. 9mm gypsum board screws up from below, taped and skimmed. Smooth, seamless plastered ceiling. Standard for homes, upmarket offices and all bulkheads.

T38 Exposed Ceiling Grid

The T38 suspended grid is the most widely used exposed ceiling grid in South Africa. Featuring a 38mm main runner height and 24mm face width, it is available in pre-painted white or black finishes. Acoustic or vinyl ceiling tiles drop into the grid from above — no adhesive, no screws. The system uses 3 connection points per main tee for a rigid, stable installation and provides quick access to services above, including wiring, ducting, air conditioning and lighting.

White & Black

Available in both finishes — black grid creates a dramatic, contemporary look in retail and hospitality spaces.

Instant Tile Access

Tiles lift out in seconds without tools — essential where services above need regular access.

Fire-Rated Option

Fire-rated version available — independently tested to achieve a 60-minute fire rating in compliant systems.

Fast Installation

Quick clip-together system with main tees, cross tees and wall angles for reduced labour time on site.

What tiles go into a T38 grid?
Acoustic mineral fibre tiles or vinyl clad tiles — in 600×600mm and 1200×600mm, square or revealed edge. We stock both at Fundi.
Do you stock black T38 grid?
Yes — we stock both white and black T38 grids, wall angles, suspension wire and clips.
How many tiles cover a 6m x 6m room?
100 tiles (600×600mm) = 36m². Or 50 tiles (1200×600mm) = 36m². Bring your room dimensions and we’ll calculate the exact quantities at no charge.
Can I add downlights and aircon grilles to a T38 grid?
Yes — the T38 grid accommodates light fittings, air distribution elements and sprinkler heads within the tile bays.

T37 Concealed Ceiling Grid

T37 Concealed Ceiling Grid being installed

The T37 concealed grid (screw-up grid) is a strong, adjustable galvanised steel framework for flush plastered and seamless ceilings. The T37-profile main tee pairs with a T32-profile cross tee to create a concealed framework that supports 9mm gypsum board screwed up from below. Once the board is taped and skimmed, the grid is completely invisible — producing a smooth, uninterrupted plastered ceiling. It is also the standard system for building bulkheads around aircon units, beams and architectural features. Faster to install than traditional timber brandering and compatible with fire-rated boards.

100% Concealed

Grid is completely hidden under the board — no visible grid lines, no exposed tees. A perfect flush plastered finish.

Bulkhead Ready

The standard specification for bulkheads around aircon ducts, beams and feature lighting runs.

Galvanised Steel

Galvanised zinc coating provides durability and corrosion resistance in freshly plastered environments.

Space Saving

Minimal ceiling drop — ideal for rooms with height restrictions where every millimetre counts.

What board do I use with a T37 grid?
9mm gypsum board. It screws up from below into the grid, is taped and skimmed to produce a smooth plastered ceiling. This is not a tile system.
Will the grid show after installation?
No — it is 100% hidden under the board once skimmed. You get a perfect flush plastered finish with no visible grid lines.
Can I make a bulkhead with T37 grid?
Yes — T37 is the standard system for bulkheads. Once skimmed it looks clean and professional and matches the rest of the ceiling perfectly.
Do I need wires or hangers?
Yes — you drop from the slab or trusses using 25×25 galvanised angle fixed at the correct centres to keep the grid level.
Can I add LED downlights to a T37 ceiling?
Yes — cut holes in the 9mm board for downlights. LED strips can also be recessed into bulkhead reveals. Plan your lighting layout before boarding.
What tools do I need to install a T37 ceiling?
A drill, spirit level, tape measure, tin snips and a plaster trowel. That’s the core kit — everything available in our accessories range.
Is the T37 grid fire-rated?
The grid itself is non-combustible. For a fully fire-rated ceiling assembly, pair the T37 grid with the appropriate fire-rated gypsum board — ask us to spec the correct system for your project.
